Four P's of Successful Coaching - Progressions

Four P's of Successful Coaching - Progressions

The idea of progressions is advancing your abilities through a series of drills and workouts to push you to be your absolute best. We do not want to become stagnant and complacent with our progressions. We have to constantly move forward and continue to grow as players and coaches. That's right, coaches must get better, they must continue to adapt and grow. When we become stagnant with our knowledge and practice plans, we become stagnant as a team.

Watching an athlete improve over the course of a season is absolutely amazing. It's part of why I do what I do. I want to push every athlete to be their very best at every level of our program. We have to understand as coaches that we are all building towards one goal. Improving our athletes both on and off the court. While progressions in the sense of basketball is important, it is equally important that we make progress as people. We want athletes that show respect to parents, teachers, officials, coaches, and opponents. The athletic program strives for our athletes to hold themselves to the highest of standards when representing our school. It makes no difference what level of coaching you are at... It is an intricate piece of the program as a whole. Please remember this statement. Although it may not always be shown... we all greatly appreciate the time and effort all coaches put in for the kids!!!!

“The greatest sin a coach can commit is to allow kids to slide by. This goes for the classroom as well as the court” – Hubie Brown

I stress the importance of FUNDAMENTALS. You are never to old, good, or cool to do fundamentals. My favorite part, as a coach, with Fundamentals is that it doesn't require you to have practice to progress with them. Trust me, you can tell if there is work being done outside of practice.  Grab a ball and get in your drive way. Dribble, Keep the ball as under control as you can while getting quicker with the dribble. Make sure you do not work only on your dominate hand. Develop your non-dominate hand, layups and dribbling!!!!!!!! One of the biggest knocks on most up and coming athletes is the lack of non-dominate hand.

“The key is not the ‘will to win’… everybody has that. It is the will to prepare to win that is important” – Bob Knight

The last few years I have begun to understand the importance of the Athletic Pyramid. The Athletic Pyramid introduces the concept of building upon each year while maintaining the fundamentals of basketball. As you grow as an athlete, fundamentals must not be ignored. On the varsity level, we utilize different drills to continue to build our fundamental abilities. From standard ball handling to "Beilein Passing" (Chest passes and catching on two feet (Gives you the freedom to determine pivot foot)) to Triple Threat "Rip Through". Regardless of the level in which you play basketball, fundamentals only serve to make you better.

“Practice habits were crucial to my development in basketball. I didn’t play against the toughest competition in high school, but one reason I was able to do well in college was that I mastered the fundamentals. You’ve got to have them down before you can even think about playing” – Larry Bird

As I continue to watch the game of basketball evolve, it is such an interesting game. The game of basketball can seriously be beautiful when played right. So many people hated to watch the San Antonio Spurs play with Parker, Ginobili, and Duncan... THAT was fundamental basketball. Selfish play was non-existent. The extra pass always being made, dribbling kept to a minimum, and high scoring. FANCY didn't seem to ever play a role. What I am getting at... Progressions are not strictly fundamentals. Progressions can be made intellectually and with maturity. Intellectual progressions are important to win basketball games. Knowing the extra pass to make, knowing where on the floor you need to be, being in the right position defensively and not putting your team in a difficult position with your attitude. Progressions are crucial to continue to produce for your team and to play at the next level. Making progressions with your maturity is, obviously, ideal. Understand your role for the team and embracing it to the fullest. No matter what the situation may be it is never acceptable to be a bad teammate. If you are having an off game or are in foul trouble... I have the expectation that you will be cheering your team on from the bench. BE THE BEST TEAMMATE YOU CAN BE!!!

“The most important measure of how good a game I played was how much better I’d made my teammates play” – Bill Russell

My advice to all of the athletes out there... continue to make progress. Continue to strive for excellence. However, you must never be satisfied with the progress. Never settle for just enough. Never settle for what others may think is enough.

My advice to all the parents of athletes... teach your athlete to push themselves. Teach them to strive for excellence. Teach them to attain all of their dreams through hard work and determination. When young athletes do it on their own the reward is so much greater!

What are you doing to get better every day?
